Many of our children get their first taste of school in the Pre-Prep Department which comprises the Nursery and Reception classes. Children may join our Nursery from the age of three, with a maximum of 14 children in the class. The Pre-Prep classes have sole use of the ground floor of one of our two houses comprising three large, airy rooms and toilet facilities. They are taught by a fully qualified, experienced Early Years teacher assisted by three qualified and experienced nursery assistants plus a helper who are all on-hand to support and care for the pupils.
The curriculum introduces children to school life and lays the foundations for their all-round development. It prepares children for their formal studies at a later age, and gives them access to constructional and creative activities. We nurture language skills through drama, stories and music, and introduce reading, writing, mathematics and French, which is taught throughout the school. They naturally progress to Year 1 when they are five-years-old.
Each of the six classes in Years 1 to 6 are taught by a fully-qualified and experienced class teacher, with several subjects, such as French, P.E., Music and Drama, being taught by specialist teachers. Years 1 and 2 also enjoy the support of a fully qualified teaching assistant. In addition have a full time specialist Teacher who works with small groups throughout the school offering extension and enrichment activities in Literacy and Numeracy.
In Years 1 and 2, the emphasis moves towards preparing the children for more formal studies in the basic subjects of reading, English, mathematics and science. The timetable also includes French, music and physical education, as well as the more interactive subjects of information communication technology and design technology. A focus on Drama really helps children of all ages develop their self-confidence and social skills.
In the Junior Department, Years 3 to 6 benefit from our successful mix of modern and traditional teaching methods. Children increase their understanding of the basic subjects of reading, English, mathematics and science, while expanding their knowledge of French, history, geography, current affairs, information communication technology and art. Regular educational trips and library visits are used to stimulate the children and increase their practical awareness. The progress of all children in the Junior Department is constantly monitored and tested twice each term. At the end of the year children take NFER standardised tests which enable the teachers to track their progress.
